I know what your thinking. “Really? Meditation?” Yes really! Meditation is big in the east, but is slowly gaining more attention here in the west. You don’t have to be in the health and wellness industry to observe that stress is all around us.
How does one cope with that stress? Our minds are on the go 24/7 and our environment is a lot different than it was fifty years ago and beyond.
There’s an excess of thoughts in your mind and it will be good for you to determine which ones are of use to you. Sit down. Be quiet. Try to be one with your conscious and find out more about your sub-conscious.
What is Meditation?
Meditation simply put, is the art of ones with your mind. Feeling every sensation in your body, but not being attached. Feeling your breath, feeling your lungs expand with fresh oxygen and exhaling out all your stress.
With meditation, one isn’t supposed to STOP thinking. That’s absurd. Your brain is more sophisticated than a modern computer. Could you really just stop all thoughts?
You have to imagine yourself as a mountaintop, while your thoughts are clouds overhead. Be OK with the fact that the thoughts (clouds) are going to arrive, but let them pass. Don’t be discouraged. Go back to your breath.
What are the benefits to mediation?
There’s so much more to meditation, but let’s talk about the benefits.
- Scientifically proven to reduce stress
- Boosts your immune function
- Increases social connection
- Increases memory (increased grey matter)
- Improves attention
- Improves overall happiness
There’s definitely a lot more, but I’m going to leave it up to you to do your own research and get excited. Just know that there are different types, so choose one that you think will work best for you. Here are some links to check out and make sure to leave your comments below!
